Water released from Veedur dam

VILLUPURAM: Collector R. Palanisamy on Friday released water from Veedur dam for irrigation in Villupuram district and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
Representatives of farmers’ associations and officials from both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry were present. They included Superintending Engineer (PWD – water sources) Sathyendran, Executive Engineer Vallikandan, Dam Engineer R. Geetha and Puducherry Executive Engineer Sathyamurthy.
Mr. Palanisamy called upon farmers on both sides to utilise water judiciously and go for the System of Rice Intensification to enhance yield.
To start with, 40 cusecs would be released. Depending upon requirements, the discharge would be stepped up during the next 135 days.
The Veedur dam, situated in the catchment areas of the Varaha River and the Thondiaru, catered to the requirements of 3,200 acres, of which 2,200 acres was located in Villupuram district and the remaining in Puducherry.
The 4,511-metre-long Veedur dam has a storage capacity of 605 million cubic feet. Water level stood at 32 ft.
The farmers in villages such as Siruvai, Veedur, Pombur, Ponnampoondi, Korakeni, Aiveli, Nemili, Eraiyur, Thollamur, Kadagampattu and Kondalankuppam in Tindivanam and Vanur taluks, and, Pudhukuppamm, Lingareddipalyam, Kathiankuppam, Inthukeni and Thethanpakkam, would benefit.
